Why is a licensing mechanism necessary?

The licensing system prevents unauthorized copying and use, and provides date expiry and user limitation facilities. Software piracy is theft, and Sector7 will take action against all perpetrators without exception.

What information is required to issue a run-time license authorization?

In order to provide an activation key for the license, the following information should be supplied to Sector7 using the form on our web-site (this can be found by selecting "licensing" on the navigation bar) or by fax:

  • Details of the machine on which the license is to be installed
  • Name of organization that owns the above machine
  • The names of the Sector 7 products for which a license is required
  • The number of users for which the license is required
  • If required, an expiration date
  • For Sector7 products, the System ID. This can be displayed by using the program gid , supplied with all Sector7 products. By far the easiest thing to do is to send us the full output from gid , or;
  • For bbc products, include:
  1. Your BBCREF , which is a short sequence of letters and digits that BBC uses to quickly identify your customer account. You can find your BBCREF by running "bbc info."
  2. The appropriate license server's server code , which is a sequence of digits thatbbc uses for generating license keys. You can find the server code by logging in on the license server and running "bbc info." The following limitations apply to server codes:
    -bbc/Sector7 staff do not know your system's server code until you relay it to them;
    - Server codes are not transferable from one system to another.
  3. For XLNT/BQMS, include the output from the XLNT command file "support.xcp" supplied with XLNT.

Sector 7 will supply either a printed Run-Time License Schedule (RTLS) or an automated email response. A temporary activation key will be supplied which has a 30-day expiration. A full activation key will be provided on receipt of the appropriate payment.

Can I transfer a license?

Yes, provided that it is to a platform of the same type as the original license. You should complete a license transfer form and submit it to Sector7 either electronically or via fax. Non-maintenance customers incur an administration fee for each license transfer; please contact Sector7 for current pricing.

If you wish to transfer the license to a different platform; i.e. from Digital Unix to IBM AIX, you should contact Sector7 Sales.

What do I do if I have a problem with licensing procedures?

If you are having problems with any of the licensing procedures described, it would be helpful to supply the following information:

  • For Sector7 products, output from the gid program and a copy of the license file, and confirmation of it’s name, location and Unix permissions.
  • For bbc products, include the output from "bbc info."
  • For XLNT/BQMS, include the output from the XLNT command file "support.xcp" supplied with XLNT.

Please submit your problem to U.S. License Support or EMEA License Support.
