Vbackup

OpenVMS-Style Backup for UNIX
from Boston Business Computing
Overview
For companies moving from OpenVMS to UNIX, Vbackup provides a means of moving data from OpenVMS to UNIX systems and back. Used in conjunction with VX/DCL , it also functions with the familiar OpenVMS command syntax. Data archived using OpenVMS BACKUP can now be restored on UNIX systems. Vbackup also functions as a UNIX backup tool that can archive UNIX file systems with the dependability and convenience formerly available only on OpenVMS systems.
Make OpenVMS BACKUP data sets available on UNIX systems. Create OpenVMS readable save sets on UNIX systems.
Vbackup translates files and their attributes to a unified format that OpenVMS BACKUP, RSTS/E BACKUP, and Vbackup running on any system can read. Because of Vbackup's portable data format, Vbackup provides a way to transfer files and file systems across OpenVMS, RSTS/E, and heterogeneous UNIX platforms.
Full System Backup
Systems can run in normal multi-user mode while Vbackup performs a full system backup. Vbackup locks files against multiple write access, and detects and warns of potential inconsistencies if other processes override locks. Vbackup saves and restores all standard and many non standard UNIX file types and characteristics, including hard and soft links, sparse files, file ownership and protection, access and modification times, AIX trusted computing base attribute, special files, and FIFOs.
Features:
- Performs full system backup in normal multi-user mode
- Stores files portably across OpenVMS, RSTS/E, and UNIX
- Reads and writes OpenVMS and RSTS/E save sets
- Accesses network tape and disk devices
- Reconstructs data from corrupted media
- Provides a common interface for users familiar with OpenVMS BACKUP
- Saves up to 254 terabytes of data in each backup operation
Common User Interface
In conjunction with VCL, Vbackup provides a common command set and interface for users familiar with OpenVMS BACKUP.
Network Operation
Vbackup optionally reads from or writes to tapes or disks on remote network-accessible systems using standard UNIX or (with VX/DCL ) OpenVMS remote file syntax.
Media Error Recovery
Vbackup's error recovery mechanism protects against data loss by automatically detecting media errors and reconstructing corrupted data.
