Nature of Project

Sun-Oracle to AIX-Oracle
Oracle Database Migration

This communications company is one of the world's leading providers of high-growth communications services as well as the largest provider of wire line and wireless communications in the United States, with more than 132 million access line equivalents and over 29 million wireless customers.

Also the world's largest provider of print and online directory information, this Fortune 10 company with more than 247,000 employees and $67 billion in 2001 revenues, has a global presence that extends to 45 countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Pacific.

The company has undertaken an aggressive approach in implementing internet business solutions to streamline interaction between customers and resellers. In particular, Sector7 was approached to evaluate the existing Sun Solaris/Oracle online ordering system and to develop a plan to improve system reliability, increase order transaction speed and improve availability to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Following the Sector7 assessment, a plan was developed that called for a transition from SUN Solaris to IBM AIX while porting the existing data to Oracle. In implementing the solution, Sector7 was able to perform the platform upgrade and data porting without any interruption in service. As a result of the migration, the client company realized greater system performance in the form of reduced transaction times. Transaction and order data was more readily available and system uptimes were dramatically increased. The resulting improvements allowed the company to work more efficiently with its reseller network and customer base.
